Welcome to my first English blog!
Learning by teaching is an effective tool. With blogging, I can share what I learned and feel interested. I can also organise the knowledge I gained during different experiences. I can also express my views.
I’ve been blogging since 2006. For many reasons, I gave up blogging, restarted after a couple of years, and then gave it up again a few times. In January, I wiped off all the old blog posts and started writing on WordPress.com, challenging myself to write one blog post every three days. In about 300 days, I completed my challenge by writing 100 blog posts without missing the schedule.
In the blogging journey, I learned to manage my editorial calendar. My writing skills and organisation skills improved a lot. I’m willing to share ideas and experiments in multiple areas, including coffee, cooking, productivity, etc.
As mentioned in the post on the original blog last week, as an ESL (English as a Second Language) learner, I want to improve my English language skills in different areas. I can listen to English YouTube and Podcast channels, but I am weak at chatting with people. I can read English books, but I rarely write anything. Emailing and messaging at the office can’t help improve my writing. I need to find a way to practise my English writing. At the same time, I want to continue my learning journey by blogging. So why don’t I blog in English instead?
On the other hand, after almost a year with WordPress.com, I don’t feel well with it. I don’t mind having ads on my blog as I’m using a free plan. However, those ads somehow look like a scam, and I can’t control which ads to show on my blog. Maybe it’s time to try something new, at least for me. That’s why I land on Medium.
Here comes my new challenge:
- I’ll write two blog posts in English weekly on WordPress.com and then import them to Medium.
- The blog posts can be translations of my original Chinese blog or new ideas.
- Embrace feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Throughout this challenge, I hope to improve my English writing skills. My goal is towards direct thinking in English rather than translating from Chinese. I’ll also review whether Medium is a suitable platform for blogging.
Let’s see what will happen after another 100 blog posts are published.
