Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe was released on Feb 24. This is the 5th game of the Kirby series released on Nintendo Switch. As a fan of Kirby, on the release day, I left the office sharply at 17:45, rushed to the console game shop and bought the game.
This game is a remake of the original Kirby’s Return to Dreamland in 2011 for Wii. Since I don’t have Wii, I didn’t play the original game before. I treated this game as a completely new game instead.
Last year I enjoyed playing the 3D platformer-styled Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Unlike the previous series, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe “devolves” back to a 2.5D platformer game. Remaking a 2.5D platformer game into a 3D version is quite impossible – it would become another new series instead. Of course, I have no idea about Nintendo’s marketing strategy. But I hope to see a new 3D platformer-styled Kirby series in future.
You again…
Back to the 2.5D game, I had to relearn the control. The pace is faster than in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Concerning the Normal Story Mode, up till now (Stage 5), it’s easier than the former series. Later on, there will be the Extra Mode, which is, as a tradition, much more challenging than the Normal Mode. The bad thing is that the stages are a bit repetitive. There is a stage where you will solve a puzzle for the Energy Sphere. There is a stage where you will defeat a mid-boss and copy its ability to get the Energy Sphere. There is a stage where you will get a Super Ability, enter a sub-stage that requires rushing, and detect a mid-boss for 2 Energy Spheres. Again, it is a remake of a game developed in 2011. It is unfair to compare the gaming mode of a game in 2011 using the standard in 2023.
That’s cheating – Kirby is totally out of the hitbox of the mid-boss.
Challenge Stages are difficult for players who aren’t skilful in playing platformer games. Till now, I couldn’t get a gold medal at any stage. The most attractive gaming mode among those available currently is Merry Magoland. It offers 10 sub-games. I tried a few sub-games. They are fun even if playing alone. Most sub-games are designed for 4 players. I will invite my friends to join me in playing these in future. I’m sure they would enjoy the moment.
I tried more than 20 times to achieve the maximum score.
The Kirby series is the only series in which I buy its games immediately on the release date. Every time I put the other stuff aside and enjoy playing them. Allow me to stop writing here. It’s time to get back to the game.
